If you think the 60s was the time of great cultural change, then think again! If the 60s icons had not jumped ‘Into The 50s’ and drenched themselves in the Music & Culture of the 1950s, we would never have had The Beatles, The Who, Rolling Stones, Rod Stewart, Elton John, Van Morrison, Bruce Springsteen, Billy Joel….

The 1950’s was the decade that had everything – the birth of Rock ‘n’ Roll, gave us Buddy Holly, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino and of course, Elvis. There was the newly formed pop chart, full of the likes of Cliff Richard, Paul Anka, Neil Sedaka and Alma Cogan – to name just a few.

Meanwhile the world of Rhythm & Blues was laying down the foundations for the history of soul music, with Sam Cooke, Jackie Wilson, Ruth Brown, The Drifters and many others. If that wasn’t enough, Country music revelled in the genius of Hank Williams and Johnny Cash, while Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Dean Martin, Julie London and Peggy Lee were selling millions of records for the newly formed Capitol records label. Then there was Broadway and Hollywood, producing some of the most loved Musicals & Movies of the 20th Century.

In The 50s, Music, Culture and Society exploded into colour, leaving a grey world with no teenage culture, in its midst – tune in and enjoy the music and stories from the most exciting decade in musical history throughout Leo’s In The 50s series.

This is the show that transports you back into a Cinema in your past, as we hear the stories behind the most loved movie soundtracks.

We’ll find who gave the instruction to leave Moon River out of “Breakfast At Tiffany’s” and who thought it would be a good idea to omit Somewhere Over The Rainbow from “The Wizard Of Oz” and how a jazz trumpeter from New Orleans turned out to be Walt Disney’s inspiration for a bunch of singing and dancing monkeys in “The Junglebook”. We’ll be digging into the soundtrack album that received 1 million pre-orders before it had even been released, such was the clamour to hear the classics from the 1950s & 60s that featured on the soundtrack album, which when it was released, would go on to sell more than 32 million copies….
